Here Comes The Sun – Make The Most of it!

From boosting serotonin levels, to regulating the immune system, to improving sleep quality, there are so many wonderful benefits of spending time in the sun. Luckily, there are also many ways for your loved one to enjoy the outdoors at Sage Park Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living. Our manicured and secured grounds are easy on the eyes, plus they offer all the safety and supervision for your loved one to have fun this season. While we know getting the benefits of sunshine is important, we know it’s also necessary to take care to avoid too much sun in order to prevent sunburn, heat exhaustion, and other negative side effects.

Keep reading to learn about some of the ways we encourage our residents to have fun in the sun at our community.

Take a Stroll

Did we mention that our community is well-kept and beautiful? We encourage our residents to take strolls around our community to get some good old fashioned outdoor exercise. We are always happy to provide them assistance, and our well-tended gardens and walking paths ensure that your loved one stays safe within our community.

Read a Book

While it may seem a bit counterintuitive, you can still get all the benefits of sunshine when in a shaded area. So, why not grab a book and find a shady spot outside to read? This activity provides both brain stimulation and can boost mood with the added benefits of sunshine!

Indulge in a Snack

Even just getting outside to enjoy a snack can be a simple way to get some fresh air. Our dedicated kitchen staff is always happy to provide residents with delicious yet nutritious snacks or meals that they are welcome to enjoy in the great outdoors. We encourage residents to take in the sights and sounds around them while spending relaxing time outdoors – it can be quite therapeutic!

Birdwatching

Did you know that there are more than 400 bird species in Ohio? That means lots of varieties to see! From American Goldfinches to Eastern Bluebirds to Northern Cardinals, your loved one is bound to see a plethora of birds right in our community. Bright red with a beautiful singing voice, Ohio’s state bird, the cardinal, is sure to make an appearance!

Spend Time with Fellow Residents

What better way to enjoy the outdoors than connecting with fellow residents? That’s one of the great benefits of your loved one living with us at Sage Park – they are constantly surrounded by peers. All of the activities we’ve previously mentioned can be more fun with friends to enjoy them with!

At Sage Park, we’re always finding safe, fun ways for our residents to enjoy the sunshine. However your loved one prefers to get outside at our community this season, we’ll make sure to always follow these sun safety rules of thumb so you can rest assured knowing that they are in good hands:

  • Ensure residents apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours.
  • Ensure residents have water or electrolyte water wherever they go to stay hydrated.
  • Ensure residents wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses to shield their face and eyes from harmful UV rays. We also recommend that residents wear cool, breathable clothing – some clothes even have built-in UV protection!
  • Limit extended periods of time spent outside to prevent heat exhaustion.
  • And of course, provide snacks to beat the heat, like fruit pops!

These activities may just become some of your loved one’s favorites

As the winter months come to an end, the city of Buffalo, New York, starts to come alive with a variety of activities for our Juniper Glen Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living residents to enjoy. From outdoor events to indoor entertainment, there is something for everyone to enjoy this season. Whether you are a lifelong resident or new to town, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and experience all that Buffalo has to offer. Our team put together some of our favorite spring activities that we’re sure you won’t want to miss.

Explore the Botanical Gardens

Springtime in Buffalo is the perfect time to explore the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. With over 23,000 square feet of indoor gardens, you can enjoy the beauty of nature and fresh blooms. The botanical gardens are home to a wide variety of plants, including exotic orchids, carnivorous plants, and even a cactus garden. The gardens also offer educational programs and workshops, making it the perfect place to have fun and learn something new.

Take a Walk in Delaware Park

Delaware Park is a 350-acre park in Buffalo and it’s the perfect place to take a stroll on a sunny spring day. The park features a rose garden, a lake, and plenty of walking paths. You can also visit the Buffalo Zoo, which is located within the park!

Visit the Albright-Knox Art Gallery

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, formerly known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, is set to reopen in June 2023 and is a must-see for anyone interested in art. The gallery features an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Pablo Picasso. The gallery also offers a variety of programs and events, including lectures, tours, and workshops. If you’re looking for something to do indoors on rainy days or when it gets a little too warm, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is the perfect place to spend a few hours.

Attend a Local Baseball Game

If you’re a sports fan, attending a baseball game is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening. The Buffalo Bisons are a minor league baseball team that plays at Sahlen Field in downtown Buffalo. The season runs from April to September, so there are plenty of opportunities to catch a game. Sahlen Field is located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, so it’s easy to combine a game with other activities in the area.

Bringing Color and Cheer to Senior Living Spaces

Spring is a beautiful season, and what better way to celebrate this time of year than by planting beautiful flowers and plants? As the snow melts away and the sun shines brighter, it’s the perfect time to brighten up your living space with vibrant colors and cheerful blooms. For our over 55 communities in Ohio, we want to share some of the best spring plants to grow and a few of the benefits they bring to our residents.

Daffodils

Nothing says spring like a field of daffodils! These cheerful flowers are easy to grow and come in a variety of colors, from classic yellow, white, and even orange. Daffodils are a great choice for over 55 communities because they are low maintenance and can be planted in large clusters for maximum impact. They also have a long blooming season, so residents can enjoy their beauty for weeks on end.

If you are planting bare daffodil bulbs, the best time to do so is actually in the fall. If you’re getting a bit of a later start, check your local nursery for potted daffodils that have already sprouted!

Hyacinths

Hyacinths are another classic spring flower that are sure to spruce up a space. Their delicate blooms come in shades of pink, blue, purple, and white, and they have a sweet fragrance that can fill a room. Hyacinths are easy to care for and can be planted in pots or directly in the ground. They also make great cut flowers, so you can bring a bit of spring indoors.

Tulips

Tulips are a timeless favorite for spring planting. These bright and bold flowers come in a wide range of colors, from soft pastels to vibrant reds and oranges. Tulips are easy to grow and can be planted in large groups to create a stunning display. They also have a long blooming season, which means enjoying their beauty for several weeks.

Like daffodils, tulips are bulbs that are best planted in the fall. But if you missed the planting season, don’t worry! Grab a bunch of cut tulips from the grocery store to put in a vase indoors, or check your garden center for sprouted bulbs in pots.

Pansies

Pansies are a great choice because they are easy to care for and come in a wide range of colors. They are also cold-hardy, which means they can be planted early in the spring and will continue to bloom well into the season. Pansies are versatile flowers that can be planted in pots or in the ground, and they look great as part of a mixed planting.

Benefits of Spring Planting

Planting spring flowers and plants offers numerous benefits. It brings a burst of color and cheer to living spaces, which can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that exposure to nature and green spaces can reduce stress and anxiety and improve mood and cognitive function. Planting flowers can also provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment! It gives you something to care for and watch grow.

The top five things to know for first time gardeners!

One of the many wonderful things about living at our luxury retirement communities in Georgia is the opportunity to explore your love for botany and gardening in our amazing community gardens. Not only is gardening a perfect way to spend time outside during the beautiful Georgia spring, but it is also proven to be a fantastic activity for your mental and physical well being.

With years of experience in our community gardens, we have created a list of our top recommendations for any of you looking to start a garden this year or just learn the basics. Keep reading for our top five Gardening tips for spring!

Know Your Zone

The first and most important thing to know when starting your garden is knowing which zone you live in. The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a great indicator of how well specific plants and produce will grow in your area, and when the best time to plant is. With that in mind we always recommend location yourself on the zone map before you start planting!

Choose your location

Gardening doesn’t have to be challenging and can be done in a raised bed or in the ground. Whichever option you choose however, you will need to ensure that your garden gets ample sunlight throughout the day to ensure that your plants will thrive once sewed. Typically this means establishing your garden anywhere that is south, southeast, or southwest facing. Before you set up a permanent location, we recommend watching your surroundings for a few days to determine where the best permanent spot will be that gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day!

Check When to Plant

The zone you are located in will determine when to plant in your area. Because climate can vary based on location, knowing when to plant which crops will help ensure success, especially as a first time gardener. There are many guides online that can help you determine what to plant and when, but we always recommend heading over to your local nursery and asking the experts! Not only will they know what works in your area, but it also helps support a local business!

Don’t Overdo It

As a first time gardener it can be really exciting to dive in and want to start growing all of your own plants and produce. While we love this enthusiasm, for those of you new to gardening we recommend starting small and expanding your garden over time. Trying to maintain too many crops can be very time consuming and if you aren’t quite ready to dedicate that much time to your plants it could ultimately lead to disaster (or at least dead crops). With that in mind we recommend finding several plants or crops that will grow well in your area (based on your zone) and starting there.

Enjoy It!

Gardening is a wonderful hobby that is meant to be fun and pleasant. While it is easy to feel defeated when a crop doesn’t grow or one of our plants dies, that is all part of the learning process of starting a garden. Our number one piece of advice is to enjoy the entirety of the experience and remember that you are learning as you go!

We love helping our residents enjoy the wonderful experience of working in our community gardens and can’t wait to see what they grow. Our talented chefs even incorporate some of their garden treasures into the meals at our communities!

How to Choose the Right Senior Living Community for You

Choosing a senior living community is a big decision that involves many factors. You want to find a place that meets your needs, preferences, and budget, as well as offers a high quality of life and care. But how do you know which senior living community is right for you?

Here are some tips to help you narrow down your options and make an informed choice:

Determine your level of care

Senior living communities offer different levels of care, such as independent living, assisted living and memory care. Depending on your health and personal needs, you may need more or less assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, medication management, and mobility. You may also need specialized care if you have a condition that affects your memory, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. To determine your level of care, you can consult with your doctor, family members, and a senior living advisor.

Consider your lifestyle and interests

Senior living communities offer various amenities and services that can enhance your lifestyle and interests. For example, some communities have fitness centers, swimming pools, libraries, art studios, gardens, and more. Some communities also offer activities and programs that cater to specific interests, such as music, sports, hobbies, and culture. You may want to look for a senior living community that matches your personality and passions, as well as provides opportunities for socialization and engagement.

Visit the communities in person

One of the best ways to get a feel for a senior living community is to visit it in person. You can tour the facilities, meet the staff and residents, sample the food, and observe the atmosphere. You can also ask questions about the community’s policies, procedures, costs, and benefits. You may want to visit several communities before making a final decision and compare them based on your criteria.

Ask for referrals and reviews

Another way to learn more about a senior living community is to ask for referrals and reviews from other sources. You can ask your friends, family members, or acquaintances who have experience with senior living communities for their recommendations and feedback. You can also check online reviews and ratings from websites such as Google, Yelp, or SeniorAdvisor.com. These sources can give you an insight into the quality and reputation of a senior living community.

Choosing a senior living community is an important step in your retirement journey. By following these tips, you can find a senior living community that suits your needs, preferences, and budget, as well as offers a high quality of life and care.

If you are looking for a senior living community that offers all-inclusive independent living, assisted living, and memory care options, with professional and caring managers, fun activities, and gourmet meals, you may want to consider Sunshine Retirement Living. Sunshine Retirement Living is a family-owned company that operates 40 senior living communities across 16 states. Enjoy the Beauty of Spring Without Allergies Holding You Back

For many of our residents at our retirement communities in PA, spring is their favorite time of year. The warmer weather, blooming flowers, and greener landscapes are some of the highlights! But for many of us spring also brings along seasonal allergies, which can cause significant discomfort and affect our overall well-being. Don’t let allergies stop you from enjoying this beautiful season. Here are our best tips for combatting your allergies this spring.

Stay Indoors During High Pollen Count Hours

Pollen is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. Did you know that there is more pollen at certain times of day? Pollen counts are actually highest during mid-morning and early evening. Knowing this, we would advise you to stay indoors during these hours to avoid exposure to pollen. Instead, spend your mornings engaging in indoor activities like reading, watching TV, or playing games with friends and family. Head outdoors to enjoy the sun at other times of the day!

Keep Windows and Doors Closed

We know this one is the opposite of what you’re going to want to do on a beautiful spring day. However, open windows and doors can let pollen inside, causing allergies to flare up. Keeping your windows and doors closed can help eliminate the spread of pollen, especially on windy days. Try using fans to circulate the air inside your space. If you absolutely cannot deny letting the fresh air inside, try to do so after it rains so pollen is less prevalent in the air.

Take Medications as Prescribed

If you have allergies, you should absolutely be taking your medications as prescribed by your doctor. Over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays can relieve allergy symptoms as well. However, you should consult your doctor before taking any new medication, especially if you have underlying health conditions or take other medications. Consult with your doctor on what the best path to fighting allergies is for you.

Wear Protective Clothing

Reduce your exposure to pollen by wearing protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses. Protecting your hair and skin from pollen is an easy way to casually fight allergies. You can also use pollen masks when going outside or doing outdoor activities like gardening or walking. Face masks can significantly reduce your reaction to pollen due to protecting you from breathing it in. Not only can you protect your outside but a mask protects your insides such as your lungs and throat.

Maintain Good Hygiene Practices

You should always maintain good hygiene practices such as washing your hands frequently, taking a shower after being outside, and washing your clothes after outdoor activities. These easy steps can help remove pollen and other allergens from the skin and clothes and reduce allergy symptoms. If you want to go the extra mile, wipe down surfaces and do a quick vacuum or sweep of the floors. Now you’re really eliminating those allergens!

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients can boost the immune system and reduce the risk of allergies. We suggest including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats in your diet. Our retirement communities in PA offer healthy meal options and nutrition programs to help you or your loved ones maintain a healthy diet.

Spring allergies can be a significant health concern for anyone but with the right tips and strategies, you can enjoy the beauty of spring without allergies. We hope these tips have helped and allow you to live a healthy and happy season!

Fresh and tasty spring dishes to try with your loved ones this spring

There’s nothing like spring vegetables and fruits to wake us up to a new season after the cold, cozy, sleepy days and nights of winter. Bright flavors and bold recipes can quickly make your weeknight meals exciting again. Some of our favorite in-season fruits and veggies include lemon, strawberry, asparagus, and parsley–all ripe for the picking!

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite spring recipes to share with your loved ones, particularly your friends and family at our retirement communities in Massachusetts. If you’re one of our residents, consider hosting a potluck with your neighbors and sharing one of these recipes. Or take an afternoon to prepare some of these dishes and host your friends or family for a meal! You can also always cook together; it’s a great activity for bonding and for creating memories. Check out our favorites below and add them into your weekly meal-planning schedule. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Blueberry Lemon and Thyme Cake

Kicking it off with a bright and zesty favorite, this loaf cake from Half-Baked Harvest screams spring. Citrus flavors are wonderful because depending on the way they are prepared, they can really be the base for any seasonal dish. In our opinion, the best way to use citrus in the spring is to tie it together with earthy herbs and sweet fruits, and this iced cake does just that.

While we don’t recommend having cake for every meal, as a once-in-a-while food, this is a surprisingly nutrient-rich cake. With antioxidant-rich blueberries and both lemon and blueberry being high in Vitamin C, the fruits pack not only a flavor punch but a health punch too! The thyme gives this cake immunity-boosting properties and a deliciously unexpected layer of flavor.

Asparagus Pasta

Asparagus is one of those vegetables you love or hate (or love to hate!). But for those of us who really love it, this asparagus and lemon pasta dish is one you can’t miss. Nothing pairs together quite like asparagus and lemon. But throw in some delightfully flavorful parmesan cheese, and you have a real winner. This creamy and truly satisfying recipe is the perfect meal for family dinners and very easy to pack up for leftovers to bring to work or school for lunch the next day. Our favorite thing about this dish is that it is one of those “ridiculously easy to make, but truly impresses a crowd” types of meals. Give it a whirl when you’re feeling like you need something new!

Strawberry Tabouli Salad

One of the most universally loved fruits, strawberries are juicy little nuggets of heaven that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. We love to add strawberries to a salad to break up the monotony of vegetables and fats. This spring take on tabouli salad mixes nutty quinoa and fresh herbs like peppery parsley, which adds bite to the dish. Sprinkles of almonds add crunch, and the juiciness of the strawberries brings an entirely new flavor profile to this staple of Mediterranean cooking. Eat it on its own, pair it with an entree, or use it as a dip for pita chips or homemade tortillas. Packed with nutrients, this delightful spring dish should absolutely be a go-to recipe for years to come.

Spring is one of the best seasons to experiment with new flavors, especially because you can take advantage of so much in-season produce. Our Chef incorporates locally sourced proteins and locally grown produce, including some from our own community gardens, into our menus whenever possible! We hope you try one of these tasty dishes –and of course, let us know if you liked it!

If you are interested in learning more about our amazing senior apartments in Massachusetts, give us a call. We’re happy to give you a virtual or in-person tour!

Simple tips and tricks for a bountiful and thriving gardening season

There’s nothing quite like the joy of watching the fruits of your labor bloom, which is why gardening is such a popular activity for many of us. Not only do we enjoy watching beautiful flowers blossom throughout the spring, but we can actually share our work with others in the form of amazing meals from fresh produce we grew ourselves.

Though gardening is fun, it also can take a little extra work to ensure a thriving garden. We at Woodland Creek Memory Care Community have come up with a list of some of our favorite tips for preparing your garden for the growing season. Take a look at our tips below, from your friendly Montgomery County retirement home.

Prepare the ground

After the long harsh winters, it’s important to take stock of the health of your soil! Over the winter, the soil becomes compacted through the cold weather, snow, and ice. While it is a bigger project than most, tilling your soil is the key to a healthy and thriving garden. It’s best to work the soil at least 12 to 14 inches deep, to ensure plenty of loose and healthy dirt for your plants to thrive in. Not only does tilling break up the compacted dirt, but it also mixes in the nutrient-stocked mulch, dead leaves, and other compost that makes the soil a fantastically rich environment for growing things.

Plan your planting

When you think of gardening, it’s easy to only think of digging into the dirt, planting seeds, and harvesting your crops. But one of the most important parts of creating a garden is careful planning. After all, what good is planting plants if you don’t feed and care for them regularly? Take a pen and a calendar and mark out your spring and summer gardening tasks. Be sure to include the dates you need to sow, transplant, and harvest your fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Schedule check-ins with your garden, including regular weeding time, watering, and pruning. We suggest marking these on your physical calendar and also on your digital calendar to ensure reminders come from several places. Last but certainly not least, be sure to block off a full weekend for preparing your garden for the following growing season, toward the end of the fall.

Think big (and little)

Gardening is amazing because there are a million different ways to find joy and peace in it. From massive acres with rows and rows of fruits and vegetables to tiny single-potted succulents in your bathroom, there are options for everyone to let their inner gardener out. Many of us assume that if we don’t have land, we can’t enjoy the beauty of flowers and plants, but this would be a huge mistake. Some of the most satisfying gardening projects can be in the tiniest details.

Include your loved one

If you have a loved one in our care, we have a great gardening prep project that you can do with them and help them be a part of your larger garden at home. In the early months of spring, many of us are planting seeds and growing seedlings indoors to transplant when they are mature enough. Consider bringing small seedling containers, a small bag of rich fertilized soil, and a selection of seeds for flowers and plants that your loved one has expressed love for.

Is their favorite flowering herb lavender? Bring some lavender seeds and spend the afternoon planting them. Transport them easily home after your time with your loved one, and then transplant them into the earth when they are ready. Take photos of the growth process to share with your favorite seniors and show them how their work has transformed your garden. It’s a project that will bond you, and bring such joy to both of you–which at the end of the day, is what passion gardening is all about.

Suggestions for welcoming the season into your home

For many of us, spring is a transformative time. With new growth popping up, the weather warming up, and the sun staying up, it’s truly a favorite season of many! It’s also the perfect time for cleaning up your space and refreshing your home. From seasonal decor to swapping out your clothing, there are many ways to prepare for spring.

At The Verandah Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, our Lake Charles, LA retirement community, we have compiled a short list of the best and frankly, easiest, ways to prepare your space for spring and beyond. Take a look below and see what ways you can best spring clean your or your loved one’s home this spring!

Clothing Refresh

An incredibly easy way to refresh your space is by sorting through your clothing and seeing what items need repair, to be donated, or seasonally changed out. It’s so easy to let sewing repair projects pile up over time, so take a day or an afternoon to sew those buttons back on, repair that tear, or hem those pants you purchased but have never worn because the legs are just slightly too long. Consider donating items of clothing that don’t fit properly to Goodwill or a shelter that distributes clothing to the less fortunate.

For items that are still in good condition or still fit properly but are not seasonally appropriate (we’re looking at you, down parkas and heavy turtleneck sweaters), take a moment to clean and properly store the items in labeled airtight containers. This will offer up important real estate in your closet and dresser drawers better suited to more seasonally appropriate clothing.

Linen Refresh

With seasonal allergies in the air, spring cleaning is a really great opportunity to deep clean your linens, including but not limited to your bedding, throw blankets, curtains, and pillows. All of these items can hold onto dust mites, stale smells, and other allergens that will aggravate your sinuses – all of which have been embedded into these items over time. While we should definitely be cleaning these items more regularly, take this spring as the impetus for starting a new routine. If you find it easy to forget to do this on a regular basis, take a moment to schedule a thorough cleaning of these items regularly. We recommend cleaning at least every couple of months, if not on a monthly basis.

Decorate Seasonally

Many of us forget about seasonal decor, and some of us will even find a winter holiday decoration accidentally left out in the middle of July. This spring, take a moment to survey your space and see what items need to be seasonally swapped out. Conversely, consider what kind of decor sings spring to you! Maybe you love fresh flowers–get some tiny bud vases or a large vase and fill them with fresh flowers on a weekly basis. We like gerbera daisies and dahlias for longer-lasting floral arrangements. Or perhaps you love the colors of spring the most–happy and soft pastels. Add a baby pink or lavender throw to your couch or bed, or perhaps a new set of sage hand towels in the bathroom. Thinking of what spring means to you can really help to decorate your space in a way that is unique and special to you!

It’s too beautiful to stay inside, so let’s get outdoors for some activity!

Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation, and it’s the perfect season for residents at our Sunshine Retirement Living communities in Pennsylvania to get outside and stay active. After a long and isolating winter, the warmer weather and longer days provide the perfect opportunity to engage in physical activities and connect with others. From soaking in the sunshine during an afternoon walk to joining outdoor fitness classes, there are countless ways for you to embrace the season and prioritize your health and well-being. Today we’ll explore some of the best ways for you to stay active during the spring and enjoy all that this beautiful season has to offer.

Walking

Walking in the spring is an excellent way to stay active and improve overall health and well-being. With the warmer weather and longer days, it’s easier to get outside and enjoy a leisurely stroll through a park or along a scenic trail. Walking has numerous benefits including improving cardiovascular health, strengthening bones and muscles, and boosting mood and mental health. Additionally, walking is a low-impact exercise that is gentle on joints, making it an excellent choice for anyone who may have mobility issues. Taking a daily walk in the spring is a simple and effective way to improve your physical and mental health and enjoy the beauty of the season.

Gardening

When we think of spring, we think of new baby plants sprouting forth. Gardening is not only the perfect activity to celebrate the season, but it is a great way to get exercise while enjoying the outdoors. It can be a low-impact form of physical activity that helps to improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. The repetitive motions involved in tasks such as digging, planting, and weeding can also help to build endurance and burn calories. Additionally, being surrounded by nature has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, reducing stress and promoting feelings of well-being. Overall, gardening is a fun and rewarding way for seniors to stay active and improve their overall health.

Yoga and Stretching

Yoga and stretching are both excellent practices that offer numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. Practicing yoga and stretching regularly can increase flexibility and range of motion, improve posture and balance, and reduce the risk of injury. In addition, yoga and stretching can help to relieve tension and reduce stress levels, leading to improved overall mental well-being. Regular practice can also improve circulation and digestion, and may even help to lower blood pressure and reduce chronic pain. Yoga and stretching can be adapted to suit any fitness level or physical ability, making it accessible for people of all ages and backgrounds. Some of our communities offer Armchair Yoga every week, so be sure to check the activities calendar!

Brain Exercises

There are some spring days where going outside just isn’t an option. “April showers bring May flowers” is a saying for a reason. On those rainy spring days, stay active by doing brain exercises, such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and other brain games. These activities can help improve memory, concentration, and overall cognitive function. Our communities host activities like devotionals, singing of musical hymns, and crafts to keep your mind active too! Find the things you enjoy and go for it!

Staying active during the spring is an essential part of maintaining good health and well-being. Whether it’s taking a leisurely walk through a park, swimming laps in a pool, practicing yoga, or crafting with friends, there are numerous ways to stay active and enjoy the beauty of the season. With so many options available, there’s no better time than the spring to get outside, stay active, and enjoy all that this season has to offer.

Liven up your home with these easy 6 tips!

As the winter season comes to a close and the temperatures begin to rise, it’s the perfect time for residents at The Gardens at Brook Ridge, our Texas memory care community, and their families to start thinking about decorating their space for spring. Spring is a season of new beginnings, renewal, and growth, and incorporating these themes into your decor can help create a fresh and inviting atmosphere.

From pastels and fresh linens to natural textures and fresh flowers, there are countless ways to infuse your space with the spirit of spring. Whether you’re looking to make a few simple updates or undertake a full-scale redecoration, decorating for spring is an exciting opportunity to welcome the change of season and bring new life to your home.

Fresh Flowers

Spring is all about blooming flowers and plants. That’s why one of the easiest and most effective ways to bring the essence of spring into your home is by incorporating fresh flowers into your decor. Decorate using floral arrangements in vases, potted plants, or add fresh blooms to a centerpiece. Flowers are a quintessential symbol of spring, and they can instantly brighten up any space with their vibrant colors and sweet fragrances. Whether you opt for a simple bouquet of daffodils or tulips or create a larger floral arrangement using a variety of blooms, fresh flowers add a touch of natural beauty and elegance to any room.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, flowers can also have mood-boosting benefits, helping to alleviate stress and create a more peaceful and calming environment. Adding fresh flowers to your spring decor can infuse your home with a sense of joy and vitality that will uplift your spirits and inspire you throughout the season.

Pastels

Brighten up your space and give it a light airiness by adding pastels. Pastel colors are associated with spring, so consider incorporating pastel hues into your decor. This can be as simple as adding pastel pillows, throws, or tableware. Pastels, whether you choose from soft shades of pink, blue, green, and yellow, are reminiscent of the colors found in blooming flowers and fresh spring foliage. By incorporating pastels into your decor through textiles, wall art, or accent pieces, you can create a tranquil and soothing ambiance that is perfect for the season.

Pastel colors can also help to create a sense of continuity throughout your home, as they are versatile enough to be used in any room, from the bedroom to the living room. Whether you prefer a monochromatic color scheme or a mix of different pastels, adding these delicate hues to your decor is a surefire way to brighten up your space and embrace the beauty of spring.

Natural Textures

Bring an organic and fresh feel to your space with natural textures. Natural materials can help to create a sense of connection to the outdoors and to the natural world. You can incorporate natural textures into your decor by using materials such as jute, rattan, wicker, or woven fabrics, which can add a tactile element and a sense of warmth to your space. Wooden accents, such as a rustic coffee table or a reclaimed wood wall shelf, can also add a natural touch to your decor. By incorporating natural textures into your spring decor, you can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of the season.

Change Your Linens

Lastly, switch out your linens to bring new energy to your space. Consider switching out your heavy winter bedding for lighter and brighter linens that evoke the freshness of the season. Store away your heavy throws and bulky blankets and replace them with fluffy, lighter rugs and decorative throws.

Decorating for spring is a wonderful way to refresh your home and bring the spirit of the season indoors. From incorporating fresh flowers and pastel colors to adding natural textures and accents, there are countless ways to infuse your space with the essence of spring. Whether you prefer a bold and colorful approach or a more subdued and natural look, updating your decor for spring is a chance to celebrate the beauty of nature.

Top tips to avoid seasonal allergies from our memory care community

Spring has sprung, and while that means fresh flowers, warmer weather, and lots of sunshine, it also means that allergy season is upon us. While all of us here at Whitetail Springs Memory Care Community are so excited to see our residents enjoy all that our incredible community has to offer this spring, we also wanted to provide a few quick tips on how to combat those pesky allergies. Keep reading for our top five tips to help prevent and reduce the impact of seasonal allergies.

Talk To Your Doctor

The first step we recommend taking if suffering from seasonal allergies is to consult your primary care doctor. Healthcare professionals will be able to provide the best insight and suggestions for how to combat seasonal allergies in a way that will not interact with other medications or health conditions. If you have considered taking an over-the-counter allergy medication, your doctor will be able to steer you in the right direction and will know your full medical history.

Stay Inside when Pollen Count is High

It is no secret that pollen is the key contributor to seasonal allergies. That is why our number one tip for combating the impact of allergies on your loved ones is to stay inside on windy days or days when the pollen count is sky-high. This will prevent you and your loved ones from being exposed to pollen that is stirred up by the breeze, which will in turn help reduce the overall impact pollen has on their health.

We know that once spring hits it can be really tempting to spend as much time outdoors as possible, but because we can still experience chilly days late into spring here in Pittsburgh, staying inside on extra windy days might just help stave off any lingering chill in the air.

Change and Wash Clothes Often

Another way to keep pollen from taking over your loved one’s sinuses is by encouraging them to change and wash their clothes after they come in from the outdoors. This can be as simple as removing an outer layer like a jacket or coat, or, when the pollen seems to coat everything, changing their entire outfit and taking a shower or bath. This will prevent any allergens from lingering on them and their clothes throughout the day, which can help reduce their overall expertise to these allergens.

Wear a Face Mask When Participating in Outdoor Activities

One of our favorite warm-weather activities for our residents to participate in during the warmer months is outdoor community gardening. While we love the cognitive and social benefits of participating in activities like gardening, we hate that it can sometimes lead to exposure to seasonal allergies. To combat this while still participating in these fun activities, we recommend wearing a face mask. This will help block allergens from coming into the nose and mouth.

Use a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

HEPA filters are another great way to help remove allergens like pollen or dust from the air in your living space. These filters are very effective at removing these allergens from the air and come in portable options that are also quite affordable.

These air filters are perfect for residents’ personal spaces like their bedrooms. Not only do they help keep the air clean, but they also produce a soothing, quiet fan noise, perfect for sleeping. We recommend leaving them on at night and any other time your loved one will be spending extended times in their room.

Live your healthiest life this season!

Spring is a season to refresh, a time when the world around us springs back to life after a long winter. It’s also a time when many of our residents and their families at Marshall Pines Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living start thinking about their health and wellness goals. Whether it’s shedding those extra winter pounds or simply wanting to feel their best, with the longer spring days and warmer weather, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside, exercise, and enjoy fresh, healthy foods.

However, as with any season, spring can also bring its own health challenges, such as seasonal allergies and increased exposure to UV rays. Staying healthy in the springtime means taking a holistic approach that includes regular physical activity, a balanced diet, good sleep habits, and smart sun protection practices. Here are a few of our best tips to staying healthy this spring:

Stay Active

Spring is a great time to get outside and stay active! Staying active can be fun while also offering great benefits for your physical and mental health. Consider activities like walks, hikes, bike rides, or even participate in outdoor yoga classes to stay active and healthy. Simply taking a leisurely walk in our community, your local park, or your neighborhood can boost your immune system and cognitive function. Regular exercise not only helps improve your physical health, but it can also boost your mood and reduce stress levels, making it an essential part of your overall wellness routine.

Stay Hydrated

As the weather warms up, it’s important to stay hydrated. You need to drink plenty of water as it helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, remove waste, and lubricate joints. Dehydration can lead to a range of negative health outcomes, such as fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. It’s important to drink enough fluids throughout the day, especially when engaging in physical activity or when exposed to hot or humid weather. Try to avoid drinks like sugary sodas and alcohol.

Protect Skin from the Sun

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial for reducing the risk of skin damage and skin cancer. To protect your skin, it’s important to apply and reapply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear protective clothing and hats, and seek shade during peak sun hours. Incorporating these habits into your daily routine can help protect your skin and maintain its health and appearance.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for our overall health and wellbeing. Sleep helps the body repair and restore itself, support brain function, regulate hormones, and strengthen the immune system. Prioritizing quality sleep by establishing a regular sleep routine, avoiding stimulants before bed, and creating a sleep-conducive environment can help improve your health and quality of life. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night!

Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is important for your overall wellness! We recommend focusing on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Consuming a diet rich in these foods can provide your body with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants while reducing the risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Spring is the perfect time to check out your local farmers’ market to see what’s in season and shop locally as well.

Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations

Our final recommendation is to always make sure you are up to date on all recommended vaccinations, including the flu vaccine. This can help protect you from illnesses and keep your body healthy in the spring and beyond!

Whatever your goals may be, we hope these tips helped you! We hope you take great care of yourself this season and maybe try something new. If you’d like to contact us or get more information about Marshall Pines Memory Care in Evans, GA, reach out to us today!

Our favorite foods that are delicious and good for you!

With chilly, rainy weather still in the forecast, it is easy to crave, warm, hearty meals to keep you satisfied. While reaching for things like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and hot chocolate are tempting, we are here to remind you that there are also healthy and delicious comfort foods perfect for those rainy New York spring days. We prioritize delicious and healthy meals here at Juniper Glen Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, which is why we compiled a list of our favorite healthy comfort foods.

Baked Chicken with Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes

At the top of our list of the best comforting recipes is baked chicken with cauliflower mashed “potatoes”. We love adding baked chicken to our weekly menus because it is an easy and healthy way to add great flavor and protein to your meal! There are tons of great recipes out there for baked chicken, but we love this one from Food Network. It is simple, yet delicious. For the side, we love using cauliflower mash as a way to incorporate more veggies into the meal without taking away the satisfying taste that is perfect for a rainy day. To pair with the perfect baked chicken, we recommend the garlic mashed cauliflower in this recipe from Allrecipes.

White Chicken Chili with Extra Veggies

Chili is an absolute rainy-weather favorite, and for good reason. We love varying from the classic chili recipe and instead preparing a delicious white chicken chili. The wonderful thing about something like chili is that you can make a big batch and then eat it all week. Chicken chili is a great option because you can use lean white meat chicken breasts as well as add tons of vegetables into the pot to add additional nutrients. This is a great base recipe for chicken chili from the Food Network. In addition to their ingredient list, we love adding in extra bell peppers, and using chicken bone broth for more added nutrients and flavor!

Butternut Squash Soup

Butternut squash soup is the perfect light lunch or dinner, especially when it is raining outside. With warming spices and delicious creaminess, it is easy to find yourself coming back for more each time you make it. A great way to make this even more nutritious is by blending in other vegetables. We love the addition of cooked carrots, pumpkin, or any of your favorite veggies that would pair well with the sweetness of butternut squash. If you are looking for a recipe to try, look no further than this one from Food Network.

Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Our final meal that is a must-try in our opinion is a cauliflower crust pizza. You can find these crusts frozen at the grocery store ready to go for all of your favorite toppings. These are a great way to enjoy all of the deliciousness of pizza, while still eating tons of nutrients. Did we mention they are tasty? In addition to the cauliflower crust, we love topping our pizzas with extra healthy toppings like diced bell pepper, diced tomato, mushrooms, sliced red onion, zucchini or yellow squash, or perhaps once it is out of the oven, some peppery arugula.

While all of these dishes are great options during the rainy spring months, we take pride in our gourmet 24/7 dining services here at Juniper Glen all year round! If you are interested in learning more about our dining options, or interested in scheduling a tour, contact our friendly team today!

Prioritize Yourself and Develop Healthy Habits this year

We live in a busy world with shifting priorities, our energies being pulled in a million different directions, and constant stimuli. For a lot of us, we tend to push it to our breaking points and burn out. But at the same time, there isn’t room for burnout with all of those responsibilities!

While it can be easy to push off our own needs, resetting our boundaries and setting ourselves up for success can be as easy as implementing some self-care practices into our daily and weekly routines. Even if we’re not quite as busy as we used to be, it’s still important to take some time out of our day to reset our minds, focus on our breathing, and reevaluate what it means to live a healthy and balanced life.

Here at Juniper Glen Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, we encourage our residents, our staff, and their families to make time for self-care. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite techniques for you, in the hopes you can find a new way to show yourself a little love. Check out our suggestions below!

Just Breathe

A lot of the time we are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or even sad, we do something that can create even more stress: hold our breath. A quick check-in with yourself to ensure you’re not holding your breath can alleviate stress immediately.

To reset your system, we suggest some simple breath exercises including the 4-7-8 method. To do this, inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale slowly and steadily for 8 full seconds. Repeat several times for maximum effect. Or you can also try alternate nostril breathing, which is a yoga technique and very effective for concentrating on your breath. You can learn more about this technique and try it for yourself.

Hydrate

The simplest solutions are sometimes the very best. Proper hydration can be tough to attain with many of us not getting enough of our daily water intake. While many of us have heard the recommended water intake is 8 cups a day, it’s a little more complicated than that. It depends on your age, body composition, exercise level, and even gender.

These days, 11.5 cups are recommended for adult women, and 15.5 cups for adult men. You can learn a little more from this article from the Mayo Clinic. Our favorite way to ensure we’re getting enough fluids throughout the day? A fun way to keep track of our water intake is to use a water bottle marked with either ounce measurements or motivational phrases–give it a try!

Move Your Body

We talk about exercise all the time because, well, there’s no better way to take care of the health of both your mind and body. Exercise releases endorphins which are one of the three happy hormones. A quick walk around the block or a small 5-minute dance party can have an immediate effect on your happiness and well-being.

But what about finding the time for exercise? This is where the practice of self-care comes in. Blocking off 10-30 minutes a day for some light exercise is one of the best self-care practices you can do. A lot of the time, we decide we don’t have the time or the energy to prioritize movement, but as little as a few minutes a day can make all the difference. So this is a challenge to schedule a little exercise into your day and to make sure you don’t miss it!

We love simple but effective lifestyle changes that have a huge effect on your well-being. These little self-care tips can make a world of difference.

Should you be interested in learning more about our East Amherst, New York memory care and transitional assisted living center, please give us a call! We’ll be happy to give you a virtual or in-person tour.

What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than with delicious and refreshing desserts? With warmer weather and blooming flowers, spring is the perfect season for residents of Heritage Point Memory Care and their families to indulge in desserts that are light, fruity, and bursting with flavor.

Whether you’re looking for a sweet treat to enjoy after a picnic or a dessert to impress guests at your next dinner party, there are plenty of spring dessert recipes that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. From colorful fruit tarts to airy cakes, the possibilities are endless. Get ready to embrace the season with these delightful and easy-to-make spring dessert recipes!

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is a classic springtime dessert that is both simple and delicious. This dessert typically consists of a sweet, crumbly biscuit or scone that is layered with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Pro-tip: use angel cake instead of a biscuit or scone to add a light sponge cake texture to this delicious dessert! The strawberries, which are the star of the dish, are often macerated with sugar and lemon juice to bring out their natural sweetness and juiciness. The whipped cream, which provides a light and airy texture to the dessert, is usually made with heavy cream and a touch of sugar. Together, these three elements create a dessert that is both refreshing and indulgent, making it the perfect treat to enjoy on a warm spring day.

Lemon Bars

Lemon bars are a zesty and tangy dessert that are perfect for spring. They’re easy to make, and the bright yellow filling is a sweet nod to the season. These bars consist of a buttery shortbread crust that is topped with a layer of creamy lemon filling. The filling is made with fresh lemon juice, sugar, eggs, and flour, and is baked until it sets into a soft and silky texture. The bars are then dusted with powdered sugar and can be garnished with fresh berries or whipped cream for a touch of extra sweetness.

Lemon bars are beloved for their bright and refreshing flavor, which is perfect for the warmer weather that comes with spring. They are also easy to make and can be prepared in advance, making them a great option for entertaining or for a simple afternoon snack.

Carrot Cake

Carrot cake not only represents spring but is also great for Easter! It’s moist, delicious, and the cream cheese frosting is the perfect complement to the spiced cake. This cake consists of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger while incorporating fresh grated carrot. The tangy cream cheese frosting complements the sweetness of the cake perfectly.

Carrot cake is beloved for its unique texture and flavor, which is both sweet and has depth due to the addition of the carrot and spices. It is also a versatile dessert that can be adapted to suit different tastes and dietary needs, such as by using gluten-free flour or substituting the sugar with honey or maple syrup. Whether served at a springtime celebration or as a simple afternoon snack, carrot cake is a delicious and comforting dessert that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Fruit Tart

Keeping along the fruit theme, is there anything more deliciously refreshing than a slice of fresh fruit tart on a warm spring day? With the crispy, buttery crust that crumbles in your mouth, topped with a smooth and creamy custard filling, and then adorned with colorful, juicy fruit that adds a burst of flavor and a pop of color. A fruit tart is a beautiful and delicious dessert that showcases the best of spring produce. You can use any combination of fresh fruits, such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or kiwi, to top a light and flakey crust.
