Suggestions for welcoming the season into your home

For many of us, spring is a transformative time. With new growth popping up, the weather warming up, and the sun staying up, it’s truly a favorite season of many! It’s also the perfect time for cleaning up your space and refreshing your home. From seasonal decor to swapping out your clothing, there are many ways to prepare for spring.

At The Verandah Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, our Lake Charles, LA retirement community, we have compiled a short list of the best and frankly, easiest, ways to prepare your space for spring and beyond. Take a look below and see what ways you can best spring clean your or your loved one’s home this spring!

Clothing Refresh

An incredibly easy way to refresh your space is by sorting through your clothing and seeing what items need repair, to be donated, or seasonally changed out. It’s so easy to let sewing repair projects pile up over time, so take a day or an afternoon to sew those buttons back on, repair that tear, or hem those pants you purchased but have never worn because the legs are just slightly too long. Consider donating items of clothing that don’t fit properly to Goodwill or a shelter that distributes clothing to the less fortunate.

For items that are still in good condition or still fit properly but are not seasonally appropriate (we’re looking at you, down parkas and heavy turtleneck sweaters), take a moment to clean and properly store the items in labeled airtight containers. This will offer up important real estate in your closet and dresser drawers better suited to more seasonally appropriate clothing.

Linen Refresh

With seasonal allergies in the air, spring cleaning is a really great opportunity to deep clean your linens, including but not limited to your bedding, throw blankets, curtains, and pillows. All of these items can hold onto dust mites, stale smells, and other allergens that will aggravate your sinuses – all of which have been embedded into these items over time. While we should definitely be cleaning these items more regularly, take this spring as the impetus for starting a new routine. If you find it easy to forget to do this on a regular basis, take a moment to schedule a thorough cleaning of these items regularly. We recommend cleaning at least every couple of months, if not on a monthly basis.

Decorate Seasonally

Many of us forget about seasonal decor, and some of us will even find a winter holiday decoration accidentally left out in the middle of July. This spring, take a moment to survey your space and see what items need to be seasonally swapped out. Conversely, consider what kind of decor sings spring to you! Maybe you love fresh flowers–get some tiny bud vases or a large vase and fill them with fresh flowers on a weekly basis. We like gerbera daisies and dahlias for longer-lasting floral arrangements. Or perhaps you love the colors of spring the most–happy and soft pastels. Add a baby pink or lavender throw to your couch or bed, or perhaps a new set of sage hand towels in the bathroom. Thinking of what spring means to you can really help to decorate your space in a way that is unique and special to you!
