Top tips to avoid seasonal allergies from our memory care community

Spring has sprung, and while that means fresh flowers, warmer weather, and lots of sunshine, it also means that allergy season is upon us. While all of us here at Whitetail Springs Memory Care Community are so excited to see our residents enjoy all that our incredible community has to offer this spring, we also wanted to provide a few quick tips on how to combat those pesky allergies. Keep reading for our top five tips to help prevent and reduce the impact of seasonal allergies.

Talk To Your Doctor

The first step we recommend taking if suffering from seasonal allergies is to consult your primary care doctor. Healthcare professionals will be able to provide the best insight and suggestions for how to combat seasonal allergies in a way that will not interact with other medications or health conditions. If you have considered taking an over-the-counter allergy medication, your doctor will be able to steer you in the right direction and will know your full medical history.

Stay Inside when Pollen Count is High

It is no secret that pollen is the key contributor to seasonal allergies. That is why our number one tip for combating the impact of allergies on your loved ones is to stay inside on windy days or days when the pollen count is sky-high. This will prevent you and your loved ones from being exposed to pollen that is stirred up by the breeze, which will in turn help reduce the overall impact pollen has on their health.

We know that once spring hits it can be really tempting to spend as much time outdoors as possible, but because we can still experience chilly days late into spring here in Pittsburgh, staying inside on extra windy days might just help stave off any lingering chill in the air.

Change and Wash Clothes Often

Another way to keep pollen from taking over your loved one’s sinuses is by encouraging them to change and wash their clothes after they come in from the outdoors. This can be as simple as removing an outer layer like a jacket or coat, or, when the pollen seems to coat everything, changing their entire outfit and taking a shower or bath. This will prevent any allergens from lingering on them and their clothes throughout the day, which can help reduce their overall expertise to these allergens.

Wear a Face Mask When Participating in Outdoor Activities

One of our favorite warm-weather activities for our residents to participate in during the warmer months is outdoor community gardening. While we love the cognitive and social benefits of participating in activities like gardening, we hate that it can sometimes lead to exposure to seasonal allergies. To combat this while still participating in these fun activities, we recommend wearing a face mask. This will help block allergens from coming into the nose and mouth.

Use a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

HEPA filters are another great way to help remove allergens like pollen or dust from the air in your living space. These filters are very effective at removing these allergens from the air and come in portable options that are also quite affordable.

These air filters are perfect for residents’ personal spaces like their bedrooms. Not only do they help keep the air clean, but they also produce a soothing, quiet fan noise, perfect for sleeping. We recommend leaving them on at night and any other time your loved one will be spending extended times in their room.
