Make the most of the Pacific Northwest Winter with us!

Oregon in the winter can be stunning–with endless evergreen trees, cozy weather, and mild winter temperatures, it’s easy to love. It’s needless to say that we love winter and encourage all of our residents to take advantage of any and all opportunities at and around our 55+ communities in Oregon, but also want them to stay healthy and safe while doing so. Our entire team takes extra precautions during cold and flu season to keep our residents safe while still assisting and encouraging them to fully enjoy this beautiful time of year.

Here is a list of 5 ways to stay healthy this season:

Get vaccinated

One of the best ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season is to get vaccinated! Getting vaccinated against the flu has an efficiency rate of up to 60%. If you do still contract the flu after vaccination, the flu shot can greatly reduce your symptoms and even help prevent hospitalizations. We know that nobody wants to think about getting the flu, but it is always better to take precautions to not only protect yourself, but also those around you. That is why getting vaccinated is our number one tip to stay healthy this season.

Get moving!

Exercise is critical to both your overall physical and mental health, which is why it is near the top of our list! Not only does exercising regularly help you maintain a healthy weight, it can improve:

  • Balance
  • Strength
  • Cognitive function
  • Mood

These are a few of the many benefits that come from exercising and keeping your body healthy! Another added benefit of exercise is that when you keep all of your body’s systems functioning properly, it can also keep your immune system in tip-top shape, which can help prevent sickness during the colder months! We encourage all of our residents to take advantage of all of our in-house workout classes and clubs to stay in shape and keep their bodies healthy.

Focus on your diet

All of our Oregon retirement communities have a menu that includes tasty, fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients. While our incredible chefs prepare balanced and well-rounded meals daily, there is still the opportunity to add healthy, and immune boosting snacks and meals into your daily routine to keep your body functioning at its highest levels. Some great immune boosting foods we recommend including in your daily meal plan are:

  • Oranges
  • Grapefruits
  • Broccoli
  • Bell Peppers
  • Lemons
  • Garlic
  • Ginger

By adding some extra nutrients to your snacks, you can stay ahead of your health while enjoying delicious flavors!

Rest when you need it

Getting enough sleep and resting when you need it is crucial to your overall wellbeing and can impact both your mental and physical health. It can help improve cognition, mood, and even help you maintain a healthy weight. In addition, it can also help boost your immune system and shorten recovery time if you do happen to get sick. Overall, getting enough sleep is crucial to staying healthy this season!

Wash your hands

We have touched on staying both mentally and physically healthy, but our last tip is focused on keeping your physical body germ-free. Washing your hands is a great way to reduce the spread of potential viruses and bacteria that live on the most unsuspecting of surfaces. Be sure to wash your hands when you return home, before eating, and frequently throughout the day. For more details on handwashing, check out the CDC’s guidelines for washing your hands.

All of us here at Sunshine Retirement Living can’t wait to see all of our residents get active and enjoy all that winter has to offer in the beautiful state of Oregon.
