Refresh Your Home for the Warmer Days Ahead

It’s that time of the year again– spring cleaning! There’s something satisfying about sprucing up your living space and giving it the deep clean that it deserves. While the results of spring cleaning are awesome, planning and achieving them can be overwhelming. Here at Waterford Terrace Retirement Community, one of the best independent retirement communities in southern California, we understand this struggle. But we’ve had lots of practice, so our expert team is sharing all of our tips to help you make your space sparkling clean and decluttered. If you want your home to be fresh and clean, you’ve come to the right place– keep reading for our top tips!

Room by room

First and foremost, we suggest that you tackle your spring cleaning room by room. Not only will it help you see more noticeable results and progress to keep you motivated, but it will also keep you more organized! This efficient method will help you achieve that sparkling clean look and feel in no time! With your rooms decided, you can then make a schedule of the order you will tackle them. Consider cleaning the areas that need the most attention and are usually neglected first, as they may take more work. You could also go the route of cleaning the room that you use the most, or that has been bothering you.

Declutter

When it comes to cleaning, whether it’s during the spring or any other season, decluttering your space makes it so much easier. Identify belongings according to whether they should be thrown away, donated, sold, or kept. Look through your closet, pantry, junk drawers, garage, and anywhere else you might have accumulated items that you no longer need or have gone bad. Once your place is decluttered, there will be less to clean and more space for organization!

Create a Checklist

Here are some examples of tasks by room:

  • All rooms: wipe down walls, vacuum the floors (behind and under furniture, too), mop hardwoods and shampoo carpets, disinfect light switches, dust ceiling fans, clean windows/window sills, dust blinds, and make note of any needed repairs as you go.
  • Bathroom: scrub and bleach toilet, scrub shower/bath, take out the trash, restock supplies, clean countertops and fixtures, clean mirror, freshen the shower drain, and wash bath mats, towels and shower curtains.
  • Bedroom: wash bedding, dust furniture, and clean any dirty clothes.
  • Living room: dust, vacuum floors, vacuum furniture, and toss curtains and pillows in the dryer to fluff them.
  • Kitchen: clean the oven, wipe down the inside of the fridge, clean the sink, polish countertops, clean the microwave, and remove any trash.
  • Outdoors: hose off and vacuum floor mats, clean patio furniture, sweep the porch, and water the plants.

Stock Cleaning Supplies

Once you have everything planned, you need to make sure you have the appropriate cleaning supplies. While it may be tempting to create a collection of awesome cleaning products, it’s best to keep them at a minimum to reduce clutter. Plus, an all-purpose cleaner can serve to clean many items! Some cleaning items you should consider are all-purpose cleaner, microfiber towels, dishwashing detergent, baking soda, a microfiber mop, and soap.

Top to Bottom

Our last tip is to always work from top to bottom when cleaning. Start from the ceiling and work your way down to the floor to avoid dirtying up items you have already cleaned.

Spring cleaning has many benefits. Not only does a clean environment help with allergies and prevent illness, the act of cleaning itself is rewarding, and the results are mood-boosting! Here at Waterford Terrace, we offer weekly housekeeping to assist our residents with ensuring their spaces are up to their standards and in tip-top shape.
