Our favorite indoor workouts to keep your loved ones moving when it’s cold out!

Winter is in full swing, which means New York temperatures are often near or below freezing. During this time of year, finding the motivation to get up and exercise can be a challenge. While finding the motivation to work out can be hard during the winter months, it is important for your physical and mental health to keep your body moving! Staying physically active helps reduce muscle loss, improves balance and mobility, as well as improves cognition and happiness! All of these wonderful benefits of staying active is why our excellent exercise team here at Juniper Glen Memory Care & Transitional Assisted Living has come up with a list of easily accessible indoor workouts that will get your loved ones body warmed up while avoiding the harsh winter weather!

Resistance Band Workouts

Resistance band workouts are a great, low impact, exercise option that is perfect for those looking to stay fit while staying indoors. With minimal equipment needed and the ability to utilize these workouts indoors puts resistance band training at the tip of our list. Workouts using resistance bands help build strength, which improves mobility and overall independence. Some great workouts to try with the resistance band are:

  • Biceps curl
  • Leg press
  • Chest press
  • Lateral raise
  • Seated calf press

It is important to remember that you can modify any of these movements to better suit your abilities and starting point.

Yoga

Yoga is a form of exercise that improves flexibility, strength, and is great for cognitive health as well. With various modifications, yoga is accessible to all experience and skill levels. These variations of yoga include arm chair yoga, which is a great way for our residents to get their bodies moving and improve their flexibility and strength. Here at Juniper Glen, we offer armchair yoga classes every Tuesday at 10:30am. We hope to see your loved one at our next class!

Stability Ball Workout

Stability ball exercises are a great way to continue building strength, specifically in your hips and core. Keeping the muscles in your hips strong and flexible can ultimately improve your mobility, balance, and overall independence as you age. The stability ball provides a low impact and effective method for strengthening your loved one’s core, legs, and hips. A few great exercises with a stability ball are:

  • Leg lifts
  • Hip circles
  • Seated marching

Dancing

One of our absolute favorite exercises to recommend to our residents is dancing! This is a fun way to get you or your loved one moving and the perfect activity to do with friends. Like many of the other workouts we listed, dancing can be modified to fit you or your loved one’s needs and can be done sitting, standing, or a combination of both. We hope that all of our residents will grab a few friends or family members, turn on their favorite songs, and let their bodies move to the music!

Our entire team is dedicated to making sure that your loved ones are safe and comfortable at all times. We want to remind you that if at any point during your exercise routines you experience discomfort or pain to stop and let one of our incredible team members know how they can assist you.
