Bringing the cozy winter vibes indoors this season

While Texans are lucky to have relatively mild winters, we don’t entirely escape the cold. Which is why building a cozy space for yourself to spend the winter months is so important. Here at The Clairmont independent living community, we relish in the winter months as they give us a chance to slow down, reconnect, and snuggle up with loved ones in the great indoors. With a couple of small additions to yourspace, anyone can create a comfortable cold-weather retreat.

Check out some of our suggestions for easy winter decor for seniors in our 55 plus communities in Austin, Texas.

Faux Fur

There’s nothing cozier than a giant blanket wrapped around you while sipping on hot cocoa in the middle of a cold spell. While chunky knit blankets and sweater blankets are hugely popular, an extra luxurious option is a faux fur throw. While they’re easy to find in any store from luxury brands to bargain stores like Target or TJMaxx, we love the idea of making an arts and crafts moment of it for a personalized throw that you or a friend or family member can enjoy for years to come. We suggest choosing your favorite faux furs (or asking your loved one what their favorite patterns or colors are), and then heading to a craft store to buy faux fur fabric and even batting. You can easily cut the fabric to the right size or add faux fur trim to other fabrics for a simple customized option. Or for more of a challenge, consider buying enough fabric and batting to create a blanket from scratch! Do you like to sew? We suggest using this easy tutorial to create the blanket of your dreams. You could even include a pillow to go along with the blanket if you choose!

Light Up the Night

Our favorite way to cozy up a space is by using twinkling lights to bring a little sparkle to those dark winter nights. Fairy lights can be placed in glass hurricane jars to add a little magic to your space. Battery operated flameless candles also make an excellent addition to winter decor–and are much safer than traditional candles. Last, but certainly not least, we love these tiny paper star lanterns that can be placed on strands of twinkle lights. While there are many options for cozying up your space, the simplest ideas often have the biggest impact. Add a little magic to your space with some new lighting!

Bring the Outdoors in

While the holidays may have come and gone, winter is still very much here. Luckily, in Texas, there is still plenty of nature to enjoy. Take a nature walk to source some materials for an indoor floral or evergreen arrangement. Or head to your local nursery for a new indoor plant to brighten up your space. Adding some greenery–from the outdoors or from potted plants–can breathe life into your space until the spring bloom arrives.
