The arrival of fall doesn’t mean the heat is gone in SC. Stay cool with these tips!

There is no denying that South Carolina summers are HOT, and fall can be more of the same! At our South Carolina memory care and retirement communities, we recognize that while many of our residents want to soak up all of the South Carolina sun, they also need to keep themselves cool while doing it. That is why we have compiled a list of four easy ways to stay cool in the remaining warm months while spending time in the sun!

Freeze Berries and Fruit For A Delicious And Refreshing Snack

Fresh fruit and berries are a favorite snack for many, and while they are refreshing on their own, we know of a way to make them even more appealing when spending time in the heat. The next time you plan on spending time in the sun, try throwing your berries or freshly chopped fruit in the freezer overnight! This will make for a delicious snack that cools you off when the days get hot. These frozen treats resemble sorbet in flavor and not only help keep you cool, but provide your body with great nutrients and antioxidants to keep your body functioning at its best.

Spend The Hottest Part Of The Day Inside

While we know it can be tempting to want to enjoy the warm weather all day long, it is best to avoid being outdoors when temperatures are at their peak. This usually occurs later in the afternoon after the earth has had time to absorb the heat from the sun all day. That is why if you plan on getting outside for some South Carolina fun, we recommend doing it earlier in the day (before lunch time) or after dinner. This will allow for you to enjoy the warm weather without putting yourself at an even higher risk of overheating!

Dress in Light clothes

As tempting as it is to slip on a sweater now that fall has arrived, wearing heavy materials in the warm weather is a definite way to get too hot too quickly. We recommend wearing loose fitting, light colored clothes to keep yourself as comfortable as possible. Linen and cotton are some of our favorite materials, they are both breathable and comfortable on the skin and are usually easy to find! Because of these material breathability, it is also ideal to wear long or three-quarter length sleeves whenever possible to protect from UV exposure!

Tip: Avoid dark colors when you can–darker colors attract heat, while light colors repel it!

Stay Hydrated!

Our best tip for staying cool in the remaining heat is to drink plenty of fluids, especially water! Keeping yourself hydrated can reduce overheating and other potential health complications. Limited amounts of other beverages like Gatorade or flavored waters are also fine, but watch out for excess sugar in these drinks!

Don’t forget: If spending any amount of time outdoors remember to wear UV protective gear like sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, and long or three-quarter length sleeves if possible.

Our team members pride themselves on helping our residents have the best experience possible at each one of our South Carolina 55+ communities. We will work hard to ensure that all of our residents have what they need to stay cool, comfortable, and happy all year long.
