Take advantage of the warm weather and enjoy all that Folsom has to offer this season!

Summer is here, and that means this is the perfect time to get outside and explore all that your city has to offer. Creekside Oaks Independent Retirement Community is located in beautiful Folsom, CA. This wonderful town offers amazing outdoor attractions (perfect to enjoy in the California weather) and is rooted in history. Whether you want to just sit back and enjoy the California sunshine or be more adventurous, we have compiled our list of top 5 activities to take advantage of this summer.

Visit the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary

A sanctuary to both rescued wildlife and domestic animals, this local attraction is a great way to get moving this summer. Founded in 1963, the sanctuary was originally created as a safe haven for a bear cub named Smokey who was burned in a forest fire. Since then, the Zoo Sanctuary has become a safe haven for various animals, including birds, bears, dogs and more, all of which are not able to be released back into the wild. If you are an animal lover, this is the place for you this summer!

Tour the Folsom Prison Museum

The prison has been in operation since 1880, and is one of the oldest still-operational prisons in the country. In addition to the long history of the prison, it caught the eye of country music star Johnny Cash, where he went on to write the song “Folsom Prison Blues” and later recorded his first live album entitled “At Folsom Prison”. In addition to serving as inspiration for Cash, the prison was also used as a set for several movies including “Jericho Mile” and “The Outlaws”. Although still in use, you can tour portions of the prison for just $2. With so much history surrounding this museum, it is a must see.

Take a Walk at Lake Natoma

Located in the Folsom State Recreation Area, Lake Natoma provides beautiful views and is surrounded by walking trails. The lake is open seven days a week from 6:00am to 9:00pm, giving you the opportunity to take an early morning stroll or sit for a cool evening picnic to avoid the heat. This is a great place to escape and connect to nature and a must-visit if you find yourself in the Folsom area this summer.

Learn About the Town’s History at the Folsom Historical Museum

Highlighting the history of Folsom, the historical museum has two major attractions. The first being the Historical Museum, which hosts exhibits about the history of Folsom. The second major attraction is the Pioneer Village, which is an immersive and interactive historical experience for those who visit. If history interests you, you can find more information about the Folsom History Museum.
