Get Social with Summer Fun

As temperatures start to rise and the bright blooms begin to emerge, the fresh summer air calls for the perfect time to host an outside gathering with your loved ones and friends. What better way to spend quality time with one another to catch up?

Your gathering could be as casual or as well-planned as you like, but a few tips for making each get-together a success never hurt anyone! And with tons of monthly activities planned by our expert team, our Massachusetts independent living communities certainly have some experience! Read our best tips for hosting a summer gathering below:

Let The Food Guide The Invitations

Every successful party is sure to have plenty of food and drinks to indulge in. If you have many guests and supplying all of the food would require too much of your time or budget, request a potluck to share your guests’ favorite dishes. Otherwise, if you have a theme in mind, use that to guide the menu selection and include it in the invitations.

When inviting your guests, let them know when food will be served, so there’s no reason to refire the grill for latecomers. Once your guests have sent their RSVPs, it’s time to determine how much food to prepare. A good general rule to follow is that every guest will have around 1.5 servings or cups of whatever you’re serving. Be sure to have an assortment of food options to accommodate those with food allergies or restrictions.

Themes and Games Are Sure To Entertain

When putting together your party, you may want to think of a theme, as it helps when developing menu options and decor. For instance, if you love gardening, you could have a Garden Party with your favorite flowers inspiring the colors of the tablescape. Other options could be a Tea and Toss, offering tea with a bean bag game outside. No matter the theme, having outside fun, such as cornhole or cricket, will keep guests entertained and the conversation flowing. Of course, if there’s any lull in conversations, music can help fill the space. Create a playlist with favorite tunes that others enjoy to keep the mood light and fun.

Consider Comfort + Safety

When hosting a party, preparation is more than food or decor–it’s anticipating any potential safety issues. When having an event outdoors, it’s best to have bug repellent and sunscreen available for any guests that may have forgotten. Light citronella candles, which are a great option to assist with pest control. Additionally, if temperatures rise in time for the event, make sure there’s a way for your guests to stay cool, such as iced beverages and shaded areas. Finally, have a first aid kit nearby for potential cuts or stings as a precaution.
