Enjoy the Great Outdoors this Season

There’s no better place to celebrate mother nature than in Oregon. Oregonians are passionate about taking care of our Earth, with our home state being one of the greenest in the country. The state encourages alternative transportation like cycling, offers clean public transit, operates most of its cities using renewable energy sources, and actively protects its surroundings with environmental policies. Here are a few ideas for celebrating the earth from Sunshine Retirement Living’s senior living communities in Oregon.

Celebrate Nature with Independent Living near Portland, OR

We know our active senior residents in Oregon love celebrating nature. We recommend trying these activities to celebrate the Earth in Oregon:

  • Enjoy the great outdoors in one of the many wildlife preserves that Oregon offers.
    • Sauvie Island: The Sauvie Island Wildlife Area is a sanctuary for over 250 species of animals, including swans and bald eagles – and it’s an excellent spot for bird watchers. This area also offers other attractions like kayaking and bicycling loops if you’re not interested in walking along the beautiful beaches.
    • Forest Park: The Forest Park hosts 70 miles of tree-shaded trails for hikers, runners, and cyclists. If you’re interested in supporting Forest Park, consider joining the Forest Park Conservancy.
    • Washington Park: This lush park is home to the Hoyt Arboretum, which hosts more than 1,100 tree species, making it the perfect spot for a hike or walk. You can also enjoy the tranquil Portland Japanese Garden while you’re there! If you want to stop and smell the roses, the International Rose Test Garden is the spot to be with over 10,000 rose plants and a gorgeous view of Mt. Hood. If you’re interested in learning about forest conservation, stop by The World Forestry Center Discovery Museum to learn about all the different kinds of trees, habitats, and forest sustainability.
    • Tyron Creek State Natural Area: Portland’s very own state park is 645 acres and includes an 8-mile trail for hiking and a 3-mile path for cycling!
  • If you are ready to get your hands dirty, our Oregon senior residents can join one of the many cleanups around the city of Portland. Get more information on cleanup locations and meet-up times.
